Members of the NAACP Culpeper Branch #7058 were pleased to honor John J. “Butch” Davies, a Culpeper native and longtime civil rights advocate, at the 44th annual Freedom Fund banquet on October 4. Davies, an attorney, former Virginia delegate, and a volunteer with numerous community organizations, was recognized for his many contributions to the NAACP and his lifelong commitment to racial equity.
Held again this year at Pepper’s Grill, the event featured a keynote speech by the Rev. Dr. Sheldon Pleasant, senior pastor at Antioch Baptist Church in Culpeper. NAACP Culpeper President Kaleb Hackley served as emcee, with additional remarks honoring Davies by former Branch President Rev. Frank D. Lewis. Brother Jesse Hines & Company performed several musical selections.
